Kodiak Community Swimming Pool
Kodiak, Alaska
The new Kodiak Pool was designed to meet a variety of community and school needs for the next 50 years. Located on a steeply sloping site behind the existing high school, the 20,000 SF facility is comprised of a 6-lane, 25-yard competitive pool with a diving end, an adjacent instructional and toddler area with ADA ramp access, retractable bleachers for spectators, and a generous lobby and greeting area with excellent visibility for staff and visitors. Materials were selected for their appropriateness to Kodiak's maritime climate. Aluminum siding and a generous entry canopy to protect visitors from inclement weather create the functional and aesthetic character of the facility. Interior finish materials of durable tile and perforated wood composite panels create a warm and acoustically attenuated space. Strategically arranged windows allow views and light while avoiding glare. The simple form, durable materials, and logical plan were combined to provide a functional and aesthetic experience for the community as well as staff.
