St. Paul Health & Community Center
St. Paul, Alaska
The St. Paul Health & Community Center is dramatically located on the windswept island of St. Paul in the Bering Sea. The relationship of the surrounding ocean, islands, and historical references are part of the culture of this isolated setting. The 21,200 SF clinic contains public areas for reception, public education, billing, a children's playroom, and conference room. The lobby was designed to be a community gathering place with sites for local art and artifacts built into the design. An important aspect of this community center is the 3,000 SF mental health component, which utilized a holistic approach to combine the physical medical needs with mental health needs of each patient. A pharmacy, laboratory, and radiology area bridge from the ambulatory into the emergency. Dental and community health suites are also incorporated into the clinic, making it a comprehensive health facility serving outlying areas in this remote region.
