Alaska Railroad Corporation Historic Freight Shed & Historic Depot
Anchorage, Alaska
The Alaska Railroad Corporation's historical Freight Shed is located east of the historical Depot near Ship Creek in downtown Anchorage. The 36,000 SF facility has been in severe disarray and suffered from neglect for years. After ECI/Hyer provided in-depth code analysis, we were tasked with renovating the existing facility to incorporate business offices, retail stores, and other spaces. The facility is unique for Anchorageit is one of the first historic buildings in Anchorage to be completely renovated for re-use. The space is oblong due to its original use and offers many garage door-style openings which are being replaced by storefront. The Freight Shed will be the first historic project completed in the State of Alaska to achieve LEED-Certification.
ECI/Hyer is currently working on the rehabilitation of the 36,000 SF Anchorage Historic Depot. The Depot is listed on the National Register for Historic Places and was originally completed in 1943 with a Moderne style of Architecture. Following closely to the Department of Interior's Guidelines for Historic Preservation and coordinating with the State Historic Preservation Office, rehabilitation efforts have included: replacing the original roof; the replacement of windows with double hung wood windows and matching hardware; returning doors and windows to their original locations; rerouting a myriad electrical and telecomm conduits; and upgrading the mechanical and electrical systems.
Both projects are part of the multi-phased Intermodal Transportation Center project. The ultimate goal of the project is to create a transportation center in Ship Creek and provide efficient and safe intermodal transfer of passengers between rail, bus, auto, bike and pedestrian transportation.
