Old St. Joseph's Catholic Church
Nome, Alaska
Recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, St. Joseph's Church is a carefully detailed 1901 Gothic structure on the City of Nome's central commons. The project consisted of relocation and restoration of the historic character and detailing of the original structure while facilitating its use as a modern public meeting facility. The scope entailed comprehensive structural repairs, the restoration and necessary reconstruction of all exterior envelope elements and fenestration, the complete revitalization of all finishes, and a complete mechanical and electrical system upgrade. St. Joseph's restoration was funded jointly by the City of Nome and the Federal Economic Development Authority, and executed by dedicated local craftspeople and laborers. The historic preservation component of this work not only revitalized an icon of historic Nome, but in providing a public meeting place, rekindled the spirit of community with which the original structure built.
